Raiders of the Lost Archives

Welcome to our hall of fame. This is a selection of some of our prize possessions – documents, photographs, books, pamphlets and maps (they will all find a place eventually). Here you will be able to see old favourites of ours as well as exciting new acquisitions. New items will be added regularly and past glories will still shine in an ‘album’ of treasures from the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. Follow the link by ‘clicking’ on Other Office Treasures to see what you may have missed!

Eight Gallant Soldiers

This photograph (accessioned as DE7752) taken outside Leicester’s Guildhall shortly after the end of the Great War, shows a much decorated group of local soldiers; all members of the Belgrave Working Men’s Club. The photograph had pride of place in the house of the one man dressed in civilian clothes, Private Mark Monaghan, who was twice awarded the Military Medal for gallantry during the 1914-18 War. The other soldiers are all identified on this excellent record eight brave Belgravians.
