Legacy of Partition

Stories

As part of the Legacy of Partition project, we interviewed over 20 local people who had experienced Partition first hand.  Their stories help to bring history to life.
Raj Kumary Bowry wrote down her memories of Indian Independence and the Partition of the country down on paper before she was interviewed.  She was present at Gandhi's funeral, and she walked in the procession.  Her young daughter Manjula (Lord Mayor of Leicester 2008-9) presented rose petals to Nehru wearing 'a beautiful white salwar kameez' when she was a schoolgirl.   Raj's family encouraged women to have a good education and to make something of their lives.
