What's on Offer? The Colliery Railway![]() From around 1833 coal from Snibston mine was transported via a branch line connected
to the Leicester to Swannington Railway (the first public railway in Leicestershire). After the closure
of the mine in 1983 this colliery railway became derelict, but thanks to financial support from the
European Community’s Regional Development Fund, this early mineral line has been restored to full working
order.
Visitors can travel on a restored 1960s passenger coach on a short round trip from
the heart of the former mine eastwards into the centre of Coalville plus westward to the old sidings
complex. The coach is pulled by the museum’s own Hunslet diesel colliery shunting loco.
