Mines of Memory
was a 12 month project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). From December 2007 to December 2008,
the project worked with local people to record the memories of 23 people who worked at Snibston and
Whitwick collieries.
Several events were organised
as part of the project, including a Reminiscence Day, a series of talks and Snibston’s first Miners’
Gala, now part of the annual calendar at Snibston.
A
selection of mining objects from the County’s museum collections is also available through the Collections
Online website and copies of mine plans acquired from the Coal Authority are available in the
Mining
Study Centre at Snibston. Four interpretive panels about the history of Snibston and Whitwick collieries
have also been produced and are available to borrow by local organisations.

The
information gathered as part of Mines of Memory is being used to inform the development of the Mining
Lives project.
