The Lyric Lounge - Write Way Up
Objects
from the Open Museum were recently in the spotlight in the thrilling Write Way Up
performance at the Y Theatre in Leicester.
For seven days the Y Theatre became
The Lyric Lounge, an inspiring performance space for performance/poetry and the spoken word. Part of
the cultural program for the Special Olympics, the week long Lyric Lounge extravaganza featured specially
commissioned performances, including Write Way Up.
Write
Way Up showcased new work from five poets inspired by objects from the Open Museum’s Resource
Box loans collection. Audiences were wowed as live literature collided with music and visuals, and new
voices made old objects come alive.
Lydia Towsey, Artistic Director for The
Lyric Lounge, said: “This show takes an innovative approach to writing and performing
poetry. It explores the power of using museum objects to inspire creativity.”
The
Open Museum’s stall also had Lyric Loungers intrigued by its resources throughout the day, and during
the morning, young people were encouraged to write poems about the objects by local poet Mark Goodwin.
Mark and the young people then performed their museumy work at Lyrical Lunchtime.

The
performances of this fun packed day and evening, showed just how powerful museum objects can be for
inspiring poetry and the spoken word.
Nineteen year
old poet Deborah Stevenson, said: “To everyone at the Open Museum- thank you for your inspiration and
liberation through your objects and attitude, you made me feel welcome and free within my writing.”
