Examples of use of Open Museum loans in Melton districtArtworks at Melton Day Service
Melton Day Service in Melton Mowbray borrowed from Artworks for the first time in
2005. They borrowed thirteen works ranging from an original print by Marc Chagal, an original
Henry Moore print to a Frederick Gore painting and facsimile railway posters. “[The] Artworks are very
much admired…” Service users and visitors benefit from the artworks which are used both to enhance
the environment, stimulate language and vocabulary skills and to inspire art activities.
Moving Objects at Swallowdale Community Primary School
The community tutor at Swallowdale Community Primary School borrowed the ‘JunKit’
display, comprising artwork created from recycled materials, to use in work with the community groups
that use the school. ‘JunKit’ was displayed in the school’s foyer area and she noted that as well as
being a success in the school’s community work, that it had been used by everyone in the school with
each class coming to view the display. It also inspired discussion and debate between parents coming
to the school.
“The display was brilliant. It had a crowd of kids around it all the time”
- Community Learning Tutor
“Everybody who has walked past it has stopped to look at it. It’s been great and
really livened up the foyer” - Head Teacher
Resource Box at Waltham C of E Primary School
Waltham C of E Primary school, Waltham on the Wolds, has become a regular user of
Resource Box in recent years, borrowing objects from the history, biology and design sections of the
collection. As a school in one of the more rurally isolated parts of Leicestershire, Resource
Box is an ideal way for Environment and Heritage Services to reach communities who do not have easy
access to facilities in towns.
Resource Box at Birchwood School
Birchwood (Melton Area Special School) borrowed 5 items from Resource Box in 2005
where the use of objects and primary source material is considered valuable for pupils with Special
Educational Needs.
Resource Box at Scalford Chapel
Scalford Chapel borrowed a range of World War II items most of which were used as
prompts for reminiscence among older people, though one ARP helmet was used as a centrepiece for a flower
arrangement in the chapel!
