Museum Collections - Short Descriptions


Archaeology

The Archaeology Collection comprises objects that represent human activity in Leicestershire from some half a million years ago to the present day, as recovered by the processes of archaeological discovery. The objects are complemented by documentary archives detailing archaeological fieldwork, and research on the objects themselves.

Art

The art collection focuses on images of the buildings, landscapes and people of Leicestershire and reflects their interests including country sports, especially fox hunting.

Botany

A comprehensive collection, both historical and contemporary, of all plants found in Leicestershire and Rutland, plus a large coverage of British and some foreign material maintained for study purposes.

Costume

The costume collection tells the story of fashionable clothing from the middle of the eighteenth century through to the present day.

Geology

A comprehensive collection of all minerals, rocks and representative fossils found in Leicestershire and Rutland, and a large coverage of British and foreign material maintained for study purposes.

Harborough Collection

Material relating to the history of Market Harborough and surrounding area.

Home and Family Life

The Home and Family Life collection reflects the way Leicestershire people build, decorate and manage their homes now and in the past. Objects in the collection demonstrate changes in domestic technology, hygiene and management of the home and record other important aspects of family life including rites of passage, entertainment and family structures.

Working Life

The Working Life collection comprises some 4000 items reflecting the traditional crafts, industries, and occupations of Leicestershire.

Zoology

A comprehensive collection, both historical and contemporary, of invertebrate animals found in Leicestershire and Rutland, plus a large coverage of British material maintained for study purposes.
