Leicestershire & Rutland Heritage Awards 2009

In 2009, Leicestershire County Council and the Leicestershire and Rutland Museums Forum celebrated the 20th annual Heritage Awards in style at Stapleford Park Country House Hotel near Melton Mowbray.
Awards were presented in six categories by dignitaries including Jennifer, Lady Gretton, the Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Roger Wilson CC, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, David Parsons CBE CC, Leader of Leicestershire County Council, Ernie White CC, Leicestershire County Council's cabinet Lead Member for Better Places, Alan Duncan MP, Member of Parliament for Melton & Rutland, and Emma Chaplin, representing the Museums Association and the Association of Independent Museums.

Best Project

Leicester City Football Club for 'Foxes' Footsteps'
In the absence of an actual museum, the aim of ‘Foxes’ Footsteps’ was to communicate some of the contents of, and stories behind, LCFC’s extensive collection of carefully catalogued and digitised artefacts and documents to as many people as possible. This was done through a series of 28 articles called ‘Foxes’ Footsteps’ in the Matchday Programme. This is sold to fans on match day (the aggregate home attendance for the season was nearly half a million) and in newsagents across the city and county.
Highly Commended: Ashby Museum for 'Celebrating a Centenary' and Lutterworth Museum for 'Collections Notation and Storage'.

Award for Work with Children & Young People

Ashby Museum for 'Junior Friends of Ashby Museum'
Ashby Museum has had educational links with schools for over 20 years. Now its facilities allow it, a junior Friends of Ashby Museum has been former. Within a week 60 children had joined. A new era has begun.
Highly Commended: Sir John Moore Foundation for 'Youth Engagement Programme' and Moira Furnace Museum for 'Education Strategy'.

Best Exhibition

Hallaton Museum for 'Ritual Hoards and Helmets'
A new exhibition telling the story of the discovery of the ‘Hallaton Treasure’ in photographs, text, displays and the words of the local amateur group who discovered it.
Highly Commended: Castle Donington Museum for 'Pleasures, Potions and Pastimes'

Best Event

Sir John Moore Foundation for 'Rat Pack Evening'
The Rat Pack evening hosted by young people of the local area in the Great Hall at the Sir John Moore Foundation. This was the young people’s idea  and they planned, marketed, and executed the whole evening. A Respect Awards was gained from the District Council for this event and one individual young person received a special award.
Highly Commended: Ullesthorpe Mill for 'Ancient Hand Mills and Querns'

Presented to the museum the judges deem to have improved most over the year

Special Mention: Castle Donington Museum

Achievement Award

Presented to the museum or organisation the judges deemed to have achieved most over a longer period of time. This is a special award to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Heritage Awards.
