Art & Craft Workshops

Join in the fun at Charnwood Museum every school holiday with children’s art and craft workshops. These workshops are suitable for children aged 3 and above. Children must be accompanied by an appropriate adult. Workshop places cost £2 per child and must be booked and paid for in advance. Please make cheques payable to “Charnwood Borough Council”. Workshops are held at: 10.15-11.15am, 11.45am-12.45pm, 1.30pm-2.30pm, 3-4pm.

Summer Holidays

Pirates Galore!
Tuesday 14 July
Pirate hats and parrots, swords and sashes. Make all you need to become a swash-buckling pirate on the seven seas.
Pirate Ships
Thursday 16 July
Decorate your own personal pirate ship to captain.
Dangerous Dragons
Tuesday 21 July
Fire-breathing flame-throwing dragons have escaped from Hogwarts and invaded the museum. A rare opportunity for Muggles to hatch their own fabulous fantasy beasts.
Stuck in the Mud

Turtle Transformations

Dream Scratchers
Thursday 30 July
Create a multi coloured background and using inspirational imagery, scratch your magical world. Part of the Discover Like Darwin events season.

Beach Bugs
Tuesday 4 August
Painted stone bugs. Paint a pebble and turn it into a crab, a fish, a bee, a ladybird or a fantastic creature of your choice. Part of the Discover Like Darwin events season.

Fantasy Fish
Thursday 6 August
Decorate a colourful fishy friend to swim in a tropical seaside scene. Part of the Discover Like Darwin events season.

Simple String Puppets
Tuesday 11 August
Long necks and long legs form the basis of this workshop run by puppet-maker extraordinaire John Haynes. Ostriches, Giraffes and Dinosaurs abound. Part of the Discover Like Darwin events season.

Fossil Art
Thursday 13 August
Create your own ‘fossils’ by painting skeletons of ancient sea creatures onto rocks. Part of the Discover Like Darwin and Archaeology Festvial event seasons.Painting at an event

Monday 17 August
Inspired by Mark Webster’s fantastic underwater photography and to celebrate Loughborough by the Sea, create your own coral reef populated by exotic fish. Part of the Discover Like Darwin events season.
Magnetic Marvels

Make Crazy Crabs that cling to your cooker and Scary Sharks that stick to your fridge. Part of the Discover Like Darwin events season.
Looks Fishy!
Wednesday 19 August
Create crazy costumes to turn yourself into a Mermaid or King Neptune in this fishy workshop.

Decorate your own colourful seaside suncatcher to hang in your window.

Animal Handling Workshops

Animal Workshops - Lizard
An opportunity to meet and handle live exotic animals.
10.15-11.00am, 11.15-12.00pm, 12.15-1.00pm, 1.30-2.15pm, 2.30-3.15pm, 3.30-4.15pm.
£2 per person

Animals in Hands: Jungle Giants

Wednesday 27 May, Wednesday 5 August & Wednesday 26 August
Meet and handle the Jungle Giants - animals who are a lot bigger than the day to day creatures you find in your garden! Find out how they are able to grow much bigger in a warmer, wetter climate than in the general British climate. Discover how they adapt their movements, their colouring and their feeding habits to allow them to survive in a jungle environment. Be prepared to meet Giant Millipedes, Giant Snails, Giant Leaf Mimicking Insects, Giant Red Legged Tarantulas, Giant Toads – and a very large snake! Pre-booking required.

Animals in Hands: Mega Beasts

Wednesday 15 July & Wednesday 12 August
Meet and handle some of the larger exotic animals that Animals in Hands have in their collection: the Mega Beasts. You will be able to explore the different skeletons the animals have, how many bones go to make up different skeletons and how different animals use their skeletons. You will also explore the difference between warm blooded and cold blooded animals. Be prepared to meet a Carpet Python, a King snake, a Leopard Gecko, a Horned Frog, a Marine Toad – and a number of Tarantulas. Pre-booking required. Part of Discover Like Darwin and National Family Week events.
