The literate classroom


What does a literate school look like? What is the most effective method of teaching creative writing? What kind of environment encourages young people to see themselves as readers and writers? And what role does the school library play? These are some of the issues that will be explored during the course of this stimulating day by award-winning author and educational consultant, Alan Gibbons.

Meeting for staff with responsibility for managing the library in primary schools


This is a yearly meeting for teachers and other staff with responsibility for managing the library in primary schools. Acting as both a user group for LSE and a support group for teachers, it provides an opportunity to discuss issues of common concern and interest regarding school library provision.

Primary New Books Group


Librarians from LSE present a selection of the best newly published fiction and poetry. These informal sessions enable teachers and library staff in primary schools to maintain their knowledge of current children’s literature and support wider reading priorities.

Book buying opportunity


Library Services for Education arranges regular trips to a library supplier to help schools to purchase books more effectively. Transport is provided from Rothley Crossroads to Peters in Birmingham, the biggest children's library supplier in the country, Peters will give a discount of 15% on books purchased to schools attending the trip. A minimum spend of £500 is usually expected. Lunch is included and an LSE librarian will be available to give advice.

Introduction to running the primary school library:developing and maintaining library stock


How can we ensure that our school library resources are of high quality, relevant to the school's needs and appealing to pupils? This basic course, consisting of a mixture of theory and practice, will be useful to teachers or other staff who are involved in developing and maintaining the stock of the primary school library, particularly those who are new to the role.

Introduction to running the primary school library: the user-friendly library


How can we ensure that our school library is user-friendly and runs smoothly? How do we organise our resources so that they can be found by staff and pupils? This basic course on library organisation and systems, consisting of a mixture of theory and practice, will be useful to teachers or other staff who are involved in running the primary school library, particularly those who are new to the role. it will include a workshop on Dewey classification.

Student voice in action


How can we involve students in library and learning spaces for the 21st  century? Led by independent trainer Jerry Hurst, this course will help with the planning, implementation and evaluation of partnership working with KS3, KS4 and 16+ students, and will provide participants with many practical ideas to take away.

How can picture books make us better thinkers?


How can we engage all children in the classroom, not just the more able or the more vocal? How can we help all children to recognise that each one of them has something significant to add to the understanding of the whole class? This course offers a taster of Philosophy for Children (P4C) and shows how we can help children to use their enquiring minds to develop their creative and critical thinking.

Creating effective library displays


A repeat of a successful course, run by the Alternative Display Company, a team of professional display artists who teach participants to create eye-catching displays on a limited budget. Equally applicable to non-library situations, this practical and enjoyable workshop is always enthusiastically received by teachers and library staff and has become a regular feature of our Inset programme.
