352 people took part in Adult Learners' Week events in Leicestershire libraries. The week began with Cultural Diversity Weekend linking with Library Services' Focus on China promotion celebrating 20 years of twinning between the county and China’s Sichuan province. During the weekend people had opportunities to try Mandarin Chinese, origami, tai chi, Chinese brush painting and Chinese cookery. The following comments were made when asked what had been enjoyed or gained from the event: - a glimpse into another culture; very calming (calligraphy)
- doing something I haven't done before and being pleased with the result (Chinese brush painting)
- learning about a new language, culture and concept of communication (calligraphy)
- what can be achieved from small square piece of paper (origami)
- how to cook a Chinese meal which was so very good and easy to follow (Chinese Cookery)
- an little understanding of the complexity of Mandarin.
Silver Surfers' Day on 23rd May aimed to give those over-50s who aren't yet online a taste of the delights of cyber-life and an appetite for more. 134 people benefited from a taster session and when asked what they had enjoyed or gained they said: - being able to actually try the internet
