Designated Conservation Areas in Leicestershire
The Planning (Listed Building) and Conservation
Areas) Act 1990 requires local planning authorities to determine areas of special architectural or historic
interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.
There
is no standard specification for conservation areas. In Leicestershire they range from the centres of
historic towns and villages, through 18th- and 19th-century suburbs, model
housing estates, and country houses set in their historic parks, to historic transport links and their
environs, such as stretches of canal.
There are currently around 200 designated
conservation areas in Leicestershire (out with the City of Leicester).
Most
buildings within a designated conservation area
are protected against
demolition, and works to trees must be notified to the district or borough council. Conservation
Area Consent for the demolition of buildings within a designated conservation area must normally be
obtained
from the district or borough council.
More information
about Conservation Areas and their management is available from the English Heritage
website.
