Soldiers of History Weekend 18-19th July

Soldiers of History

Picnic at Papillon

See the remains of Papillon Hall, constructed in the 1620’s and remodelled by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll in 1904. Evidence of continuous occupation on the site dates back to the Iron Age. The Upper Welland Archaeological Group will show visitors around this nationally significant site and explain the findings from their excavations. The Medieval Landscape of South West Leicestershire

Former County Survey Archaeologist Fred Hartley looks back over his work surveying historic earthwork features in Hinckley & Bosworth District.
The sites include Deserted Villages, Castles, Moats, Mills and Formal Gardens, created and abandoned at various times between the 11th century and about 1750, He will be signing copies of his recently-published book on the subject.
