Getting Involved

Many people want to "do something for the environment", or to "get out and about in the countryside".  Volunteers are needed, in every parish, to record natural history and heritage information.
It is important that people get involved locally, because natural heritage features are ultimately lost or safeguarded at local level.
Survey projects you can help with include habitat surveys which record features such as woodlands, hedgerows, grasslands and field ponds, as well as changes in land use and wildlife habitats. Surveys are also available for monitoring seasonal change Season Watch and species such as reptiles, butterflies, hares and rabbits.
The details you record will be fed into the local Biodiversity Action Plan - a detailed strategy to save some of the most threatened habitats and species of the two counties. Your information will provide a valuable update on the state of the natural environment.
Heritage Wardens
The Heritage Warden network is made up of volunteers who help monitor and conserve the rich heritage of Leicestershire & Rutland’s countryside and landscape.
You do not need to be an expert to get involved in volunteering to record natural history or to become a Heritage Warden. All you need to do is think about how much time you would like to give to learn about the wildlife and heritage of your area. The most essential qualification is that you genuinely care for your local environment, its heritage and cultural distinctiveness.
Heritage Wardens in Action provides information on the types of projects and activities that heritage wardens have been involved in.
