Surveying for newts

This practical information session on newts began by looking at the different types of newts found in Britain: the smooth newt, the palmate and the great crested newt.  We then learnt about their habitat, life cycle, current distribution and the different survey methods used. Examining smooth newts

Two trips were made to Burbage Common and Woods in the late afternoon and evening to practice surveying for great crested newts.

It was great to be able to put what we had learnt into practice immediately as there is nothing more valuable than learning by doing.  In addition the free manual and information sheets we received consolidated our learning.

The great crested newt is a protected species so a licence from English Nature is required if you wish to survey and handle them.  By participating in this training session those of us who were interested could go on and apply for a licence.  It was a well run and informative session and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in getting involved in newt conservation.
