Collections Management Policy

Collections Management Policy 2003 - 2008Executive SummaryThe County Council owns, or has custodial responsibility for, wide ranging and substantial collections of museum objects, works of art, archives and information. This is the material evidence of the evolution of what is now Leicestershire from the earliest times to the present day. It is a unique resource which is called upon by the Council for a range of interpretative and educational programmes, but it is also used extensively by individuals and community groups for research and to pursue their own learning objectives.
As well as making the collections available for appropriate use, the Service is responsible for maintaining them in good order for use by future generations of people from Leicestershire and beyond. This Collections Management Policy sets out how that can be achieved through the diligent application of procedures designed to meet national standards for collection care. The County Council’s commitments are clearly stated, as is the policy, and the legal and ethical frameworks within which the collection management procedures can be carried out.
A delicate balance must be struck between access and use of collections and their long term stability: this policy demonstrates how that can best be achieved.
The Policy is set out according to the proposed new Registration standard, and focuses on the acquisition, rationalisation and disposal of museum and archive collections, their loan, documentation, conservation, with professional and other stakeholders at a local, regional and national level, and will establish a policy to meet the challenges of Renaissance and emerging agenda.
