Countryside Access - Rights of Way Guide

There is an ancient Common Law right to pass and repass along highways at all times. Footpaths and bridleways are highways, they only differ from other forms of highway, such as roads, by the type of traffic entitled to use them. Lack of use has no effect on the legal existence of a right of way

Maintaining the Rights of Way -
footpath Footpaths - Yellow arrows - for walkers only
bridleway Bridleways - Blue arrows - for walkers, horse riders and cyclists
restricted byway Restricted Byway - Plum arrows - walkers, horse riders, cyclists and horse-drawn carriages
byway Byway Open to All Traffic (BOTAT) - Red arrows - walkers, horse riders, cyclists, motor bikes and motor vehicles
