![]() GeologyWe keep information on the important geology of the county and we are working with colleagues to make this information more available to the wider public and to enthusiasts.
Leicestershire and Rutland have some of the oldest and youngest rocks in the UK. Our geological history has created the hilly country of Charnwood Forest, the broad valleys of mid-Leicestershire and the rolling countryside in the north and east of the two counties.
The Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGS) pages let you find out more about our geology through a database or through maps, by individual geological sites or by following themes. You can also find out where the most scientifically important sites are – the 'RIGS'.
