Foster Carers Training
|
TrainingThe Department is committed to the provision of training and support groups for foster carers and expects that foster carers will be committed to attending these sessions. Discussions between foster carers and their fostering social worker will help to clarify which training sessions would be most beneficial and relevant to them.
The Department's training aims to enable foster carers to work with children and their parents in the context of a multi-racial society. The Family Placement Team currently set their training programmes to provide different levels of training on different topics.
Training is split between pre approval and post approval training. Pre approval training should prepare you to understand the fostering task and to prepare you for your first placement. It allows you to meet other new foster carers as well as more experienced ones.
Post approval training should start as soon as possible after you have been approved. There are a number of basic courses that we expect all newly approved carers to do. These include Understanding and Recognising Sexual Abuse; Managing Challenging Behaviour; Understanding the Allegations procedure. We also ask that you undertake First Aid training, Education Training.
Throughout the year we also provide other more specialist training events that are promoted through your fostering social worker. We are planning more courses on dealing with health issues and we are planning to continue the very helpful training offered by The Children and Adolescent Mental Health Team (CAMHS) on behaviour and attachment.
Training and development opportunities will facilitate foster carers achieving the required standards within a year of approval.
