Work Experience
We arrange one-day work experience placements in the spring term of each year for young people aged over 14. These are mostly in County Council Departments but sometimes with other organisations.
The placements give young people the opportunity to experience what it is like to go to work and to see what specific jobs involve.
For young people who want to do longer work placements, we arrange for up to two weeks to be spent on work experience over the summer holidays. We pay young people £8 per day as an incentive for taking part.
A Week In The Office - A Young Person's View
When I was six years old, I use to play mums and dads with my friend Cindy she loved playing as the mum. Any way so I would go to work in my imaginary office, in my bedroom and work on my imaginary laptop, so I would pretend to work until I got bored. Three minutes later I would be having my two-hour lunch brake, then going back to work and I would most likely have done over time. Five minutes later I would arrive back home on my imaginary car. I would go in to the lounge and collapse on the sofa I would call Cindy over and say “Please could you get me a cup of tea darling, I have had a tiring day at work today!”
Ten years later I’m sitting in front of a laptop typing this experience for others to read. Oh boy the sleep really catches up with you while you are at work. Work, what a word, when some body asks me what have I being doing this week, I proudly respond by saying “I have been working at county hall this week” I believe that this job can be demanding at times and that is when I have it easy, I come to work from nine in the morning till four in the after noon and with an hours brake to eat at twelve. You may think that is hard well compared to what the rest of the team do it is a holiday.
They arrive here at seven in the morning and the have been known to stay here till seven at night that is twelve hours work that they have had to do, to make sure that they do the best possible work they can. So you see I have learnt many key skills that can be applied to other things in life, I have learnt a certain amount of team work, I have learnt to appreciate hard work and have learnt to be a bit more self dependent and self motivating and I have learnt how much effort is involved in making sure we have everything we need and even want.
There are also many perks that have come with this job for the week, firstly I have received a £3.50 voucher every day I have worked here to have something to eat, so if you have a bottom less pit for a stomach, like me, then this is great, I’m getting out of the house and kept busy and this can be quite fun. So I’m working descent hours, I’m learning key skills, I’m eating lots of free food and I’m even getting paid for it. I just can’t wait till next year or maybe even get a job here on a more permanent basis.
So to conclude this I thank corporate parenting for giving me so much.
THANK YOU!!!!
