Children in Care Council

All children and young people in care and care leavers are encouraged to express their views about all issues that concern them.  They are encouraged to attend any meetings which are being held to discuss plans for them either in their placements or at school.  If any child or young person feels they need additional support in these meetings, they can ask a Children’s Rights Officer to attend with them.
In addition to this, all children and young people in care can be involved in the Children in Care Council.  This involves meeting as a large group during the school holidays in order to plan and review work and to share experiences.  It also provides the opportunity to undertake specific pieces of work in smaller groups.  We are planning to have these pieces of work accredited by our youth worker, Joe Roughton.
Members of the Children in Care Council, which used to be called T2C, are involved in a number of projects, including the following:
  • Interviewing staff who want to work with, or on behalf of, children in care
  • Helping to train foster carers and social workers
  • Making presentations or running workshops at conferences
  • Being consulted as the ‘voice of children in care’ by those who are arranging services for children in care
  • Helping to produce the local authority’s Pledge to children in care
  • Managing the T2S fund which pays for sports, leisure and other activities for young people in care
  • Attending the Corporate Parenting Steering Group
