Child Protection Legislation

The main act of law, which protects children, is the Children Act 1989. It gives responsibility to the 'local authority' to make enquiries when anyone contacts them with concerns about child abuse.
In Leicestershire and Rutland and Leicester City, it's the Childrens Social Care Services that do this. However, Social Care staff will never operate in isolation. They work closely with the Police and other relevant agencies to carry out enquiries.
They will also always work with the child, parents and carers and consider the involvement of the wider family. This ensures everyone has a clear picture about the situation and helps sort out any misunderstandings early on.
The fact is that many children do actually remain at home with their families. With the right support, the family Will be able to cope better and stay together. This might mean a combination of services provided by health, education, social care and voluntary organisations,
For example:
  • day care
  • family centres
  • home care
  • respite care (a short break)
  • after school clubs
  • health checks
  • parenting skills
  • anger management courses
  • behaviour management
  • counselling and advice for individuals and family groups
